Excerpt from Les Lettres Provinciales De Blaise Pascal

Again, Protestant writers are generally agreed in con demning Probabilism out of hand. That I am unable to do. It is not Probabilism, as it seems to me, that is to blame for the lax morality which shocked Pascal and must shock all right-thinking men, but its unscrupulous application in a corrupt age to the system of universal and compulsory confession. The point is controversial and important, and I have devoted a good deal of space to it in the Introduction. In dealing with it I have drawn freely on the learning and sound judgment of my friend Mr. E. J. Thomas, of Em manuel College, as on the question of Grace I have benefited from hints given me by a master of doctrinal theology, Dr. J. F. Bethune-baker, Lady Margaret Professor Of Divinity. I desire gratefully to declare these and all my borrowings. For the use made of them I am alone responsible.
