CONVENTION between France and Spain, relative to the Stay of the French Troops in Spain. - Signed at Madrid, 9th February, 1824*.

CONVENTION conclue entre l'Ambassadeur de Sa Majesté Très-Chrétienne, et le Ministre-d'Etat de Sa Majesté Catholique, pour le Séjour des Troupes Françaises en Espagne.

S. M. C. Le Roi d'Espagne et des Indes, ayant jugé nécessaire de demander à S. M. T. C. Le Roi de France et de Navarre, qu'une partie de l'Armée Française restât encore en Espagne, afin d'assurer le repos et le bien-être de Ses Etats, d'avoir le tems de recomposer Son Armée sur les bases de l'ordre et de la discipline, et de consolider Son Gouvernement de manière à contenir la malveillance et les factions qui tenteraient d'en troubler la tranquillité;

Et S. M. T. C. ayant à cœur de prouver à S. M. C. la tendre affection qu'elle lui porte, l'intérêt qu'elle porte à la prospérité de l'Espagne, et désirant contribuer de tout Son pouvoir à l'affermissement de la Monarchie Espagnole:

CONVENIO concluido entre el Sr. Secretario de Estado de S. M. Católica, y el Embajador de S. M. Cristianísima, relativo á la Permanencia de las Tropas Francesas en España.

Habiendo juzgado necesario S. M. Católica El Rey de España y de las Indias, pedir á S. M. Cristianísima El Rey de Francia y de Navarra, que una parte del Ejército Frances permanezca todavía en España, con el objeto de asegurar el bienester y el sosiego de Sus Estados, de tener tiempo para reorganizar Su Ejército sobre las bases del orden y de la disciplina, y afianzar Su Gobierno hasta el punto de poder contener los esfuerzos de la malevolencia y de las facciones capaces de intentar la alteracion de la tranquillidad;

Y vivamente decidida S. M. Cristianísima á dar pruebas del tierno afecto que profesa á S. M. Católica, del interes que toma por la prosperidad de la España, y del deseo que tiene de contribuir con todo Su poder á la consolidacion de la Monarquia Española:

Leurs Majestés ont arrêté de faire choix de Plénipotentiaires pour discuter et signer une Convention, qui pût remplir l'objet de leur commune sollicitude;

En conséquence elles ont nommé, savoir:

S. M. T. C. le Sieur Louis Justin Marie, Marquis de Talaru, Pair de France, Maréchal de Ses Camps et Armées, Chevalier de l'Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint Louis, et de l'Insigne Ordre de la Toisond'Or, Son Ambassadeur près

de S. M. C.;

S. M. C. Don Narcisse de Heredia Begines de Los Rios, Comte d'Ofalia, Chevalier Grand Croix de l'Ordre Américain d'Isabelle la Catholique, Numéraire de l'Ordre Royal et Distingué de Charles III., Conseiller-d'Etat, Surintendant-Général de Courriers et Postes d'Espagne et des Indes;

Lesquels, munis de leurs Pleins Pouvoirs, sont convenus des Stipulations suivantes:

Art. 1. S. A. R. Le Duc

d'Angoulême, Généralissime de l'Armée Française, laissera en Espagne un Corps d'Armée de quarante-cinq mille hommes, qui séjournera jusqu'au ler Juillet, 1824.

Ce Corps sera sous les ordres de son Général Commandant en Chef, qui s'entendra avec le Gouvernement de S.

Los Infrascritos, autorizados al efecto, han convenido en los Artículos siguientes:

Art. 1. S. A. R. El Señor Duque de Angulema, Generalísimo del Ejército Frances, dejará en España un Cuerpo de Ejército de quarenta-cinco mil hombres, que permanecerá hasta el 1o de Julio de 1824.

Este Cuerpo estará bajo las órdenes inmediatas de Su General Comandante en Gefe, quien estará de inteligencia con
