1765 of the Bengal year 1172, as a free gift and ultumgau, without the affeciation of any other perfon, and with an exemption from the Cuftoms of the Dewannee, which used to be paid to the court, on condition of their being fecurity for the fum of twentyfix lacks of rupees a year, for our royal revenue; which fum has been appointed from the Nabob Najim al Dowlah Bahader, and after remitting the royal revenue, and providing for the expences of the ni zamut, whatsoever may remain we have granted to the faid Company.

At this happy time our royal firmaun, indispensa

bly requiring obedience, is iffued, that the Chucklahs of Bundwan, Midnipore, and Chittigong, etc. and also the twenty-four pergunnahs of Calcutta etc. (the zemindary of the high and mighty, the noblest of exalted nobles, the chief of illuftrious warriors, our faithful fervants and fincere well-wishers, worthy of our royal favours, the English Company) which were granted to the faid Company in the time of Meer Mahomed Coffim and Meer Mahomed Jaffier

Khawn, deceased. We, in confideration of the at- 1765 tachment of the faid Company, have been graciously pleased to confirm to them, from the beginning of the Fufful Rubby of the Bengal year 1172 as a free gift and ultumagau, without the affociation of any other perfon. It is requifite that our royal defcendants, the Viziers, the bestowers of dignity, the Omrahs, high in rank, the great officiers, the Mutleddees of the Dewannee, the managers of the business of the Sultanut, the Jagueerdars and Crooriers, as well the future as the prefent, ufing their conftant endeavours for the establishment of this our royal command, leave the said districts and pergunnahs in poffeffion of the faid Company from generation to generation, for ever and ever; looking upon them to be infured from dismillion or removal, they must on no account whatsoever give them any interruption, and they must regard them as excused and exempted from the payment of all manner of customs and demands. Knowing our orders on this fubject to be moft strict and politive, let them not deviate therefrom. Written the 24th of Sophar, of the 6th Year of the Jaloos. (12. Août 1765.)

Whereas a funnud has been prefented to us under

the feal of the Nabob, Najim al Dowlah Bahader,
to the following purport, viz. "The fum of 222,958
,,ficca rupees and odd, agreeably to the Dewannee
,,funnud and the funnud of the high and mighty
,,Sujah al Muluck Hoffam ô Dowlah MEER MOHA-
MED JAFFIER KHAWN BAHADER, has been appoin-
,,ted from the Pergunnahs of Calcutta, etc. in the
,,Sircar of Sautgaum etc. in the province of Bengal
(the Paradise of the earth) the zemindary of the
,,English Company, as an unconditional jagueer to
the High and Mighty Zubdut al Muluck Nusser al
,,Dowlah LORD CLIVE, Bahader, now likewise the
,,faid Pergunnahs are confirmed as an unconditional
,,jagueer to the High and Mighty aforefaid, from
,,the 16th May of the 1764th year of the Christian
,,ftile (answering to the 14th of Zelcada of the
,,1177th year of the Hegira) to the expiration of
,,10 years, they fhall appertain as an unconditional
,,jagueer to the High and Mighty aforesaid, and
,,after the expiration of this term, to revert to the
,,Company as an unconditional jagueer and perpetual
.,gift; and if the High and Mighty aforefaid should
,,die within the said term, they fhall revert to the
Company immediately upon his death." And whe-
reas the faid funnud has met with our approbation
at this happy time, therefore our royal firmaun, in-
difpenfably requiring obedience, is iffued; that in
confideration of the fidelity of the English Company
and the High and Mighty aforefaid, the faid jagueer
ftand confirmed agreeably to the aforefaid funnud:
it is requifite that the prefent and future Mutfeddees
the Chowdries, Canongoes, Muckaudums, Ryots,
and all other inhabitants of the Pergunnahs of Cal-

cutta, etc. in the Sircar of Sautgaum, etc. regard 1765
the High and Mighty aforefaid during the foremen-
tioned term, and after him the Company aforesaid,
as unconditional Jagueerdars, and regularly pay them
the revenues of the faid Pergunnahs.

Written the 24th Sophar, the 6th year of Jaloos.

In thefe happy times, our firmaun, and full of

fplendor and worthy obedience, is defcended purporting, that whereas Salabat Jung Bahader, Subahdar of the Deccan, conferred the Sircar of Siracole, etc. on the French Company; and that, in confequence of its not being confirmed by us, either by firmaun or otherwife, the high, mighty, and glorious Chiefs of the Chawns, Chofen of the Omrahs, Seapoy Surdars, truly faithful, worthy of receiving favours and obligation, our invariable and neverfailing friends and well-wishers, the English Company, (having fent a large force for that purpose) did expel the French therefrom: We therefore, in confideration of the fidelity and good wishes of the High, etc. etc. English Company, have from our throne, the basis of the world, given them the aforementioned Sircars by way of iniam or free gift (without the leaft participation of any person whatever in the fame) from the beginning of the Phufful of Tuccaucooul, in the year of Phaly 1172 equal to the month of April 1762. It is incumbent upon you, our Sons, Omrahs, Viziers, Governors, Mutfeddees, for the affairs of our dewanfhip, Mootecophils for those of our kingdom, Jagueerdars and Croories, both now and hereafter, for ever and ever, to use your deavours in the ftrengthening and carrying into execution this our moft high command, and to cede and give up to the abovementioned, English Company, their heirs and defcendants, for ever and ever, the aforesaid Sircars, and efteeming them likewise free, exempt, and safe from all difplacing and removal: by no means whatever, either molest or trouble them on account of the demands of the Dewan's office, or those of our Imperial Court. Looking upon this high firmaun, as an abfolute
