Hundred Maps and Cuts, curiously Engraved on copper. Third Edition. London: Henry Linlot. MDCCXLIV-VI. 6 vols., folio, pp. lxxii, (4), 668; 2 l., pp. 744; 794; 780; 21., pp. 708; 824, Index, 56 1., xxix BA. 13017

305 Plates.

To this edition a copious index is added, and there is some little difference in the arrangement of the articles. The account of books of voyages and travels is also brought down to the present year. Many of the works in this collection have never appeared elsewhere in English. Sir James Macintosh remarks: "The old voyages are always more picturesque and poetical than modern. Churchill and Harris furnish a great abundance of Indian imagery." And Richarderie observes: "This collection is very valuable; its place cannot be supplied by recurring to the original works, as a great part of them are first published in it from the manuscript." In the so-called Mondidier Catalogue, a copy is described as being on the largest paper. It is a work which sells at a price below its real value. In 1825, Wheatley's copy sold for £12 12s.; 1840, Jas. Bohn, mor., £18 18s.; Merly, £12; Reed, £13 6s.; Splidt, £15 58.; Dr. Heath, £15; Maddison, £20; and Joshua Smith, £22 11s. 6d. It now ranges at from £4 to £6 6s. in booksellers' catalogues.

This work is a translation, with some augmentations, of the introduction to Churchill's collection of voyages. The French editor, in his preface, apologises for the cruelties of the Spaniards to the Indians in this summary way: "It was difficult to use moderation towards beings human only in figure; finally, of these savages were made men, of these animals were made Christians. God is adored where he was not known. The mission truly has not been like that of the first apostles, but the Gospel has been preached and received."

"The importance of this book, for the history of America, has been pointed out in Dr. G. Asher's bibliographical appendix to his 'Hudson the Navigator. London. 1860.' 8vo, pp. 261. ... They also contain the date of his first voyage, which was in 1494, not in 1497, as is generally supposed."

CICERO (M. T.) M. T. Cicero's | Cato Major, or his | Discourse of | Old-Age: | With Explanatory Notes. | Philadelphia:| Printed & Sold by B. Franklin, MDCCXLIV. Sm. 4to or 12mo, pp. viii, 159. BA., H. 13040

Probably the finest production of Franklin's press, and really a splendid specimen of the art. The title-page is rubricated. The translator was Judge James Logan; and Franklin, in his address, "The Printer to the Reader," calls it, "this first translation of a classic in this Western World," which is not strictly correct. Sandy's translation of Ovid was made in Virginia about ninety years earlier, but printed and published in London; and Franklin himself had printed Cato's "Moral Distiches," Englished in couplets, in 1739, which translation is attributed to James Logan. See our No. 11548. See also Epictetus, infra. It is, doubtless, the second classic author translated and printed in North America, and is eagerly sought after by American collectors. Uncut copies are among the rarest of rare books. I know of but four copies-the two mentioned above, one belonging to Mr. William Menzies, and one to Mr. C. E. Mann, the latter being the copy described in Stevens' Nuggets, No. 551, is on "large and thick paper, and unique' - a mistake. It was reprinted in England as

CICERO. Cato Major: or, a Treatise on Old Age, by M. Tullius Cicero, with Explanatory Notes from the Roman History. By the Honourable James Logan, Esq., President of the

Council, and Chief Justice of the Province of Philadelphia. Fourth Edition. Philadelphia, Printed; Glasgow, Re-printed By R. Urie. M.DCC.LVIII. 12mo, pp. 168, 2 1. 13041

CICERO. M. T. Cicero's Cato Major, or Discourse on Old Age. Addressed to Titus Pomponius Atticus. With Explanatory Notes. By Benj. Franklin LL.D. Philadelphia: Printed by B. Franklin. London: Re-printed for Fielding and Walker. MDCCLXXVIII. 8vo, 2 l., pp. 163. Portrait. 13042

In this edition, Dr. Franklin is made to appear as the editor; doubtless a publisher's trick, to increase the sale of the book. See M. R., LIX. 467. In the last edition the title is :

CICERO. Cato Major; or, a Discourse on Old Age, addressed to Titus Pomponius Atticus, with Explanatory Notes, by Benjamin Franklin, LL.D. Philadelphia: W. Duane. 8vo, 13043

PP. 251-357

This was intended to form part of Duane's edition of Franklin's works, but was omitted.

"The first part only was printed; the second and third part were seen in MS. in Madrid some time ago, but it is not known what became of them."-RICH. The manuscript of the third part is now in Mr. Lenox's collection. Mr. Prescott bestows much praise on the work, and Mr. C. R. Markham characterizes it as "one of the most remarkable literary productions of the age of Spanish Conquest in America." It is, in fact, the only book which exhibits the "physical aspect of the country as it existed under the elaborate culture of the Incas."-PRESCOTT, II. 328. As long ago as 1835, Mr. Rich priced this at £5 5s. ; it would probably sell for five times the price now (1870). In a catalogue of Puttick and Sampson, for 1860, an edition is described as "Anvers en Casa de Juan Steelsio, 1553," which is probably the same as described in our note to No. 13046.
