M. Gaffarel, dans son ouvrage intitulé le Brésil français (pp. 30-54) parle du voyage de Gonneville et affirme que ce capitaine débarqua au Brésil dans le pays des Carijos où il séjourna environ six mois, de janvier à juillet 1504. Durant son voyage de retour il débarqua deux fois sur

ce continent, une première fois dans le pays des Margaïats ou des Tupinambas, une seconde fois non loin de Bahia.

Gonneville est donc le premier de nos compatriotes, après Cousin, dont le voyage au Brésil ait laissé des traces certaines dans l'histoire, et la relation de son voyage est bien authentique puisqu'on peut en confirmer la véracité et reconnaître, au moins dans leurs traits principaux, les pays qu'il a décrits.
